Michelle Owens Wheaton, age 49 of Dorchester, SC passed away on Friday, September 2, 2016. She was born to the late Rick Delane Gilliam and Sarah Jernigan Jones on October 8, 1966. Michelle is survived by her husband, Captain Timothy Jay Wheaton of the home, daughter, Dannielle OwensReid, Los Angeles, CA, parents, Leonard and Sarah Jernigan Jones of Callawassie Island, SC, sisters, Wendy Jones Bernstein of Charleston, SC , Beverly Gilliam Hudson, and Melissa Gilliam Blackwelder both of Salisbury, NC. Michelle’s sisters in law include Pamela Jean Kelly of Pulaski, Iowa and Vickie Hewitt of Colfax, Iowa. Michelle had 5 nephews and 3 nieces that loved her very much.

Michelle graduated from West Rowan High School before graduating from Charleston Southern University in 1998 with her BS degree. Michelle’s accomplishments in life included holding her license with CBC Atlantic. As one of the first women in South Carolina to receive the prestigious CCIM designation, she was a pioneer for all women in Commercial Real Estate. Michelle was president of CCIM in 2005, becoming the first female to hold that distinction since the organization was founded. Michelle met the love of her life, Captain Timothy Jay Wheaton in 2004. They were happily married in May 2009. Together, they built a loving home for rescued animals and were able to make lifelong memories with their family. Michelle had a passion for helping others that included a broad spectrum of real estate, jewelry making classes, volunteering with the elderly, animal rescue and a retail consignment store designed specifically to help low income families afford designer clothing. In lieu of flowers, Michelle would like any donations sent in her name to the ASPCA and any horse/dog rescue program.
