Sue Walker Holling

Posted August 22, 2018

Sue Walker Holling of Meggett, widow of Archie B. Holling, died Wednesday, August 22, 2018. She retired from Dorchester School District Two as a financial secretary.

Sue was born December 16 1936 at old Roper Hospital in Charleston and was raised in North Charleston by her parents, Carson and Eugenia Wolff Walker. She attended Chicora Elementary and High Schools, graduating in 1954. She remained in North Charleston, working as a bookkeeper, doing some TV commercials and being crowned Miss North Charleston in 1956, until her marriage to “Tunkie” Holling in 1957 when they moved to Atlanta where she earned her “Putting Hubby Through” from Southern Polytechnical Institute while he earned his degree. After a short time in Greensboro, NC they found their way back to the Lowcountry and Summerville.

She enjoyed her retirement to the Toogoodoo and was active in St. Paul’s Exchange Club and Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church.

Sue was known to her friends and neighbors as “the crab lady” because of her love of catching and preparing crab delights. They entertained many friends at the river and enjoyed the friendly locals with whom they made many long friendships.

She often said her greatest accomplishment was in marrying the right man and raising two children to be proud of. She often bragged that she “taught them everything they know, but not everything I know.” Helping her granddaughter, Carson, the apple of her eye was a privilege and pleasure.

She is survived by a daughter, Laura Holling Kaplan (Steve) of Charlotte; a son, Archie “Bucky” Holling (Carla); and granddaughter, Rachel Carson Holling of Ravenel.

The relatives and friends of Sue W. Holling are invited to attend her Celebration of Life Service at 4:00 PM, Sunday, August 26, 2018 at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, 5412 Hwy. 165, Hollywood, SC 29449.
